Flower Power

A Montessori Mom, that works for Ace Warehouse, offered to donate 400 Amaryllis bulbs because of an unseasonable surplus. In steps Madam Gardner (Rohini), and her army of Montessori apprentices. The big boxes, loaded with bulbs were disassembled. They were stored in early June, the children planted them in November, and the bulbs are now ready to bloom in time for the holidays.

The schools donated a significant number of the flowers to the Center Place (a non profit civic center for the fine arts) as a fund raiser. Some have been planted around the schools and about half will be sold to raise monies for the American Cancer Society.

Great projects take foresight, initiative, an eager army of helpers and a green thumb. I marvel at Rohini’s passion for gardening, and the love she has inculcated in the children to play in the mud — with purpose.

What a novel project — flower power saving lives and helping to battle cancer. That’s a great way to celebrate the holidays.
